The Bridge: Kaua’i to College

We began in the Spring of 2016 with an idea and some conversations. The idea belonged to Susan Davis, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist listening to stories from her patients, her husband’s boat crew, and her stepdaughter. It was a simple one: maybe high school kids would be helped, if they want to go to college, by a one-to-one relationship with a mentor who could advise and encourage them and their families.

Over the next few months, the conversations grew into joyful collaborations with volunteers interested in supporting The Bridge: Kaua’i to College with their time, money, and talent. Relying primarily on our island’s highly efficient coconut wireless, we soon had four mentoring pairs and our first graduating senior!

In May of 2017, we became a stand-alone 501c3 nonprofit registered in the State of Hawaii.

CENTA Centre for Teacher Accreditation (CENTA®) is making teaching an aspirational profession by assessing and certifying the competencies of teachers, connecting them to career opportunities, rewards and recognition, and supporting their professional development. CENTA® equally helps schools and systems attract, develop, grow and retain great teachers. This leads to a virtuous cycle where many more teachers are motivated to improve their competencies and aspiring teachers see this as a valid career option – therefore fundamentally improving the quality of education.
Future Hope In the last two decades many things have moved on in India, yet many thousands of children still live on the streets, abused, exploited and maimed. We respond to these problems by taking the most vulnerable children who have no family capable of caring for them into one of our homes, whilst also offering them and children from the very poorest families in the slums an all-round education at Future Hope School. Our aim is to help the children overcome their poor start in life to become independent and caring adults.
Gurukool Academy Our name is a reflection of the ancient Indian Vedic culture. Gurukul means the place of the teacher. Literally, guru means teacher, and kula means family. So gurukul means more than just a school, but a place where the student comes to be a part of the family of the guru, learn the culture, gain knowledge, explore, observe and prepare for life. We opened the doors in 2005 in the Ardenwood area, and then gradually moved to this bigger and better place to accommodate our growing family and to continue giving high quality care and education to the generation next. We are proud of our unique after school setting and high quality care.

Newsy Pooloozi

We are a mother-daughter team of podcasters who crawl under the bed each week to record our news podcast for kids.

Why under the bed? Because the sound is better there (and it makes us laugh)! We live in India but have roots across the world. Stuck inside all summer during the nasty old COVID-19 pandemic, all we could do to feel connected to the world was report on it. And so Newsy Pooloozi was born!
